For 16 years now, Alive & Running 5K Walk/Run has raised valuable funds to support our Suicide Prevention Center.  In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 15 minutes, claiming more than 36,000 lives a year.  Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. among adults 18-65, the second leading cause of death among teens and young adults, and seniors ages 65 and older account for 16 percent of all suicide deaths.  This is a public health issue that does not discriminate by age, gender, ethnicity or socio-economic status.
The Alive & Running 5K is a fun and heart-warming way to increase suicide awareness.  This family-oriented event features a Kiddie 1K, an entertaining program featuring Chikara Taiko Drummers, Cadet Corps and Color Guard from Walter Reed Middle School, and an Expo with lots of vendor booths, balloon artists and snow cones.  We also display our Memorial Banner, filled with pictures and names of the loved ones we lost to suicide.

Walk With Friends: Aiko's Team Shares Their Story
Marilyn Norobi, team captain of Aiko's Team, shares her story about why the Alive & Running 5K Walk/Run is important to her.

In 2003, just months after my daughter’s death by suicide, four friends offered to be with me at the Alive and Running 5K.  We called ourselves “Aiko’s Team” as we turned in donations.  Donations that a dear church friend collected for me, as I wandered around in a fog.  When I thanked her, she said “I wanted to do something. I felt helpless.  This I could do.”
With her words in mind, I organized Aiko’s Team in earnest the next time.  I was no longer a victim of suicide, but a survivor.  I was taking a stand.  I was giving meaning to my daughter’s death.  Aiko’s Team has been a part of Alive and Running ever since.  Our numbers vary from the original 5 to a high of 69 in 2008.
Each team member and those they talk with, represents another person who is aware that we need to talk about suicide, to educate ourselves on the warning signs and to take action to help others.
The Suicide Prevention Center at Didi Hirsch, does all this. The task before us is to educate. 1) Increasing awareness and skills at non-judgmental listening to friends and family in need. 2) Decreasing the stigma of mental illness. 3) Directing people to qualified resources before and after a suicide.
You can join Aiko and others in helping SPC and it's programs continue to reach out to those needing help.
